Mosquitoes of West Coast Islands, South Korea


Abstract
In 1958 Dr.Chu, one the authors made mosquito collections, both adults and larvae, on the western islands including Pakyong-Do, Sochong-Do, Palmi-Do, Bu-Do, Dok-luk-Do, Sunmi-Do, Songup-Do, Mokdok-Do, Keukyulbi-Do, Ong-Do and Aechong-Do. Dr. Bin, the other author, made another mosquito survey on Anma-Do, Son-Yu-Do, Yi-Do and U-Yi-Do. The following is the result of both surveys:
1. It was found that five species belonging to three genera are occuring on these islands as listed hereunder:
Anopheles sinensis, Culex pipiens, Aedes togoi, Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Culex vishnui (This species was encountered. only on Pakyong-Do).
2. The most common species found is Aedes togoi, which was seen at almost all locations checked in the course of surveys. This species breeds in tidewater ground and rock pools of the coastal areas. It was also found on the islands where no people reside.
